Deep Tissue, Hot Stone or Prenatal? Choosing the Right Massage

Booking a massage should not require a decoder ring. Here is what each service on our menu actually does, so you can choose based on your body instead of the prettiest name.

Pressure is not the whole story

Deep tissue is often requested when what a guest really needs is targeted work. Deep tissue uses slower strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia — ideal for chronic tension in the neck, shoulders and low back, or for athletes recovering from repetitive load.

If your goal is stress relief and nervous-system reset rather than knot-hunting, a Swedish-style therapeutic massage at moderate pressure does far more for you. You can always ask your therapist to go deeper in specific areas mid-session.

Heat, cupping and energy work

Hot stone massage uses smooth heated basalt stones to warm tissue before the therapist works it, which lets muscles release with less pressure. It is a favorite through Minnesota winters and for anyone who runs cold or tenses under strong hands.

Cupping creates gentle suction that lifts tissue and encourages circulation — excellent for stubborn adhesions and mobility. Reiki sits at the other end of the spectrum: fully clothed, non-manipulative energy work for guests who need rest more than physical work.

Prenatal, couples and getting the most from your visit

Prenatal massage is performed by therapists trained in safe positioning and bolstering for every trimester, focusing on the hips, low back and swelling in the legs. Couples massage puts two tables in one room — a favorite for anniversaries and for anyone who finds a shared experience easier than a solo one.

Whichever you book, arrive ten minutes early, hydrate before and after, and speak up about pressure. The best massage is a conversation, not an endurance test.

Questions & Answers

How often should I get a massage?+

For general stress and maintenance, monthly. For a specific injury or chronic pain pattern, weekly or biweekly for a few weeks, then taper.

Will deep tissue make me sore?+

Mild soreness for a day is normal, like after a workout. Drink water, stretch gently and use heat if needed.

Is prenatal massage safe in the first trimester?+

Many providers prefer to wait until after twelve weeks. Check with your care provider and let us know at booking.

What should I wear?+

Undress to your comfort level — you are always fully draped. Reiki and chair massage are performed fully clothed.
